Day 1: Arrival in Berhampur – Transfer to Mahendragiri

Arrive in Berhampur (Brahmapur) and meet our tour representative at the railway station. Set off for Mahendragiri, the second-highest peak in Odisha at 1,501 metres, roughly 85 to 100 km and around 3 to 4 hours by road via Tumba to the Burakhat Pass at the mountain’s base. The final 10 to 12 km climb to the summit is a winding hairpin road requiring a vehicle with good ground clearance. Check in at the Mahendragiri Nature Camp, a simple cluster of cottages near the top. Spend the evening at altitude in the quiet of a working ashram community – cold, still, and genuinely contemplative. Overnight stay at Mahendragiri.

Day 2: The Summit – Ancient Temples and the Triple Peaks

A full day at the summit, revered in the Mahabharata and the Brahmanda Purana as the site where the sage Parasurama meditated, and named Mahendra Parvat in the Ramayana. Visit the ancient temples spread across the mountain’s three peaks, said to have been built by the Pandavas. This is a working religious site rather than a picnic destination, and the pace of the day should reflect that. Weather changes quickly here, cloud and clear sky alternating through the day; patience is often rewarded with a clearing view over the Eastern Ghats and the Mahendratanaya valley. Overnight stay at Mahendragiri.

Day 3: Descent via Gandahati Waterfall – Transfer to Ghodahada

After breakfast, check out and begin the descent, stopping at Gandahati Waterfall, roughly 30 km from Mahendragiri, one of the region’s few waterfalls that flows year-round. Continue toward Berhampur, then on to Ghodahada near Digapahandi in the Ganjam lowlands, a considerably easier transfer than the mountain roads of the previous two days. Check in at the Ghodahada Nature Camp on the reservoir’s edge, a genuine change of pace after two days at altitude – flat, warm, low-effort country after the demanding climb. Spend the late afternoon at the reservoir, known locally for its mugger crocodile rearing programme, with hills and forest framing the water and a fine sunset over the dam. Overnight stay at Ghodahada.

Day 4: Ghodahada Boating and Ujjaleswar Temple – Berhampur Departure

After breakfast, take a boat out on the Ghodahada reservoir – calm, scenic water framed by forested hills, with a genuine chance of spotting crocodiles along the banks – and visit the nearby Ujjaleswar Temple, a cave shrine on Badapada hill overlooking the reservoir. Check out and transfer to Berhampur, roughly 45 to 47 km and around an hour to an hour and a half by road, in time for your onward train. Overnight journey onward.
