Day 1: Arrival in Berhampur – Transfer to Mahendragiri

Arrive in Berhampur (Brahmapur) and meet our tour representative at the railway station. Set off for Mahendragiri, the second-highest peak in Odisha at 1,501 metres, roughly 85 to 100 km and around 3 to 4 hours by road via Tumba to the Burakhat Pass at the mountain’s base, followed by a winding 10 to 12 km hairpin climb to the summit. Check in at the Mahendragiri Nature Camp near the top. Spend the evening in the quiet of a working ashram community, cold and still at altitude. Overnight stay at Mahendragiri.

Day 2: The Summit – Ancient Temples and the Triple Peaks

A full day at the summit, revered in the Mahabharata and the Brahmanda Purana as the site where the sage Parasurama meditated. Visit the ancient temples across the mountain’s three peaks, said to have been built by the Pandavas. Weather changes quickly at this altitude, and a clear view over the Eastern Ghats rewards patience rather than a fixed schedule. Overnight stay at Mahendragiri.

Day 3: Descent via Gandahati Waterfall – Transfer to Ghodahada

After breakfast, check out and descend, stopping at Gandahati Waterfall, roughly 30 km from Mahendragiri and one of the few in the region flowing year-round. Continue via Digapahandi to Ghodahada, a considerably easier transfer than the mountain roads of the previous two days. Check in at the Ghodahada Nature Camp on the reservoir’s edge. Spend the late afternoon at the water – known for its mugger crocodile rearing programme and framed by forested hills – with a boat ride and a fine sunset over the dam. Overnight stay at Ghodahada.

Day 4: Ghodahada Morning – Transfer to Jiranga (Chandragiri) – Padmasambhava Mahavihara

A relaxed morning boat ride on the reservoir and a visit to the nearby Ujjaleswar cave temple on Badapada hill. After breakfast, check out and transfer to Jiranga, popularly known as Chandragiri or “Mini Tibet,” roughly 60 to 70 km through Digapahandi and past Taptapani’s sulphur hot spring, where the landscape shifts from dry farmland into forest and gentle Ghat road. Check in at a simple guesthouse in the Tibetan settlement. Visit the Padmasambhava Mahavihara – the largest Buddhist monastery in eastern India, inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2010 – walking among the terrace-farmed hillsides that give this refugee settlement its distinctly non-Odisha character, and spend time in the monastery’s spiritual garden as the light fades. Overnight stay in Jiranga.

Day 5: Jiranga Monastery – Berhampur Departure

A quiet final morning at the monastery, open from 8:00 am, with an optional short excursion to the Khasada Waterfall about 6 km away. After breakfast, check out and transfer back to Berhampur, roughly 80 to 90 km and around 2.5 to 3 hours by road, in time for your onward train. Overnight journey onward.
