Embark on a spiritual and cultural adventure with our 2N/3D Kumbakonam Tour, designed to take you through the heart of Tamil Nadu’s ancient temple town. Known as the “Temple City,” Kumbakonam is famed for its rich history, magnificent temples, and vibrant local traditions. This tour offers a perfect blend of sightseeing, relaxation, and exploration, providing you with an authentic experience of South India’s heritage. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this tour is crafted to ensure you enjoy the best of Kumbakonam in just three days.
Arrive in Chennai and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Kumbakonam, driving south along the East Coast Road and the Grand Southern Trunk Road through Villupuram and Chidambaram before turning inland towards the Cauvery delta. The drive takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours and the landscape changes perceptibly as the road enters the delta belt, the paddy fields widening, the tank bunds appearing at regular intervals and the gopurams of successive temple towns punctuating the flat horizon well before each town is reached. Check in at your stay in Kumbakonam by early afternoon. Spend the evening at the Mahamaham Tank, the largest temple tank in Tamil Nadu and the site of the Mahamaham festival held once every twelve years, and walk the old town streets around the Kumbeshwara Temple as the lamps are lit for the evening puja. Overnight stay in Kumbakonam.
After an early breakfast, begin the Chola temple circuit with the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, approximately 4 km from Kumbakonam, a twelfth century Chola masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the stone carving on the mandapa walls and the chariot-form base of the main shrine represent some of the finest surviving Chola craftsmanship. Continue to Gangaikonda Cholapuram, approximately 35 km north of Kumbakonam, the capital built by Rajendra Chola I after his northern campaign and home to the Brihadisvara Temple, the lesser-visited twin of the more famous Big Temple at Thanjavur, with a vimana of comparable scale and significantly fewer crowds. Return to Kumbakonam for lunch and spend the afternoon at the Sarangapani Temple and the Chakrapani Temple, two of the most architecturally significant of the town’s many shrines, before ending the day at a traditional bronze casting workshop where the lost-wax process that has produced Chola bronzes for over a thousand years is still practised by hereditary artisans. Overnight stay in Kumbakonam.
Start early with a drive to Papanasam on the Cauvery river, where the river ghat and the surrounding delta landscape are at their most active in the early morning with farmers, washermen and temple-goers moving along the riverbank before the heat builds. Continue to Thanjavur and visit the Brihadeeswarar Temple, the greatest surviving monument of the Chola empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its vimana rising 66 metres above the flat delta plain in a statement of imperial ambition that remains astonishing a thousand years after its construction. Before departure, stop at a Kumbakonam degree coffee house and a traditional sweet shop for the filter coffee and the milk sweets including the celebrated Kumbakonam degree coffee and the sakkarai pongal for which this town is specifically known across Tamil Nadu. Transfer back to Chennai via the Grand Southern Trunk Road for your departure.
