Day 1: Arrival in Koraput – Jagannath Temple and the Tribal Museum

In the afternoon, visit the Sabara Srikhetra Jagannath Temple, home to a distinctive local tradition of Lord Jagannath worship rooted in the region’s tribal heritage, and the Tribal Museum just behind it, where tools, weapons, costumes and musical instruments give a genuine introduction to the cultures of the district’s many tribal communities before you encounter them in the countryside. Spend the evening settling into Koraput’s hill-slope setting, sometimes called the “second Kashmir of Odisha” for its cool climate and green landscape – a nickname better taken as an indication of comfortable weather than a literal comparison. Day 2: Kolab Dam, Gupteswar Cave and a Coffee Plantation Walk

After breakfast, drive the short distance to Kolab Dam, about 20 km from town, for a walk along the top of the dam between the deep blue reservoir on one side and the manicured Kolab Botanical Garden on the other, with an optional boat ride on the reservoir. Continue to the Gupteswar Cave Temple, a shrine set within a natural limestone cave. In the afternoon, walk through one of Koraput’s coffee plantations, learning how the district’s own distinctive coffee is grown and processed, with a chance to taste it freshly brewed. Round off the day browsing for Kotpad handloom textiles, hand-dyed using traditional natural methods unique to this region. Overnight stay in Koraput.

Day 3: Transfer to Deomali

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Deomali, Odisha’s highest peak at 1,672 metres, roughly 60 to 70 km and around 2 hours by road via Semiliguda and Kunduli, the final 20 km climbing through increasingly lush hill country. Check in at the Deomali Nature Camp on the hilltop. Spend the evening at altitude in cool mountain air, watching the light fade over ridge after ridge of the Eastern Ghats. Overnight stay at Deomali.

Day 4: Sunrise Above the Clouds – Waterfall Trek

An early start, ideally before dawn, for Deomali’s signature experience – standing at the summit edge as mist and cloud fill the valleys below while the peak stays clear, and the Eastern Ghats emerge layer by layer in the first light. Spend the morning at the hilltop viewpoints and the tribal foothill villages of the Kotia Panchayat. In the afternoon, trek to the nearby Deomali Waterfall through forest and undulating terrain; the path is rewarding but the return climb can turn slippery, so pace and proper footwear matter. Overnight stay at Deomali.

Day 5: Deomali – Koraput Departure

A final quiet morning at the hilltop camp before breakfast. Check out and transfer back to Koraput, roughly 60 to 70 km and around 2 hours by road, in time for your onward train. Overnight journey onward.
