Immerse yourself in the weaving heritage and riverside serenity of Maheshwar on the 2N/3D Maheshwar Handloom & Saree Tour. Explore Ahilya Fort, peaceful Narmada ghats, and the evening aarti, then go behind the looms at Rehwa Society and WomenWeave to understand authentic Maheshwari sarees. This 2N/3D Maheshwar Handloom & Saree Tour blends craft, culture, and river landscapes into a compact, enriching getaway.
Arrive in Maheshwar and meet our tour representative. Maheshwar lies about 95 to 100 km from Indore, roughly two hours by road, Indore being the nearest airport and rail hub. Check in at your hotel, ideally one with a Narmada or fort view. In the late afternoon, when the light softens and the heat eases, explore the Ahilya (Holkar) Fort, the 16th-century riverside fort that became the seat of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, with its Rajwada courtyard, the queen’s modest throne, and small Holkar-era museum. Walk down to the ghats below and stay for the evening Narmada aarti, the town’s quiet daily ritual by the river. Overnight stay in Maheshwar.
This is the heart of the tour, and the day is built around the craft, not around shopping. After breakfast, spend the morning at the Rehwa Society, set within the Ahilya Fort complex, the non-profit founded in 1978 by Richard and Sally Holkar that revived Maheshwari weaving from near-extinction, today around 250 weavers, most of them local women, at over 100 looms. Watch the weaving at close range, understand the silk-cotton blend and the signature reversible two-way border (the bugdi weave) that defines a true Maheshwari, and meet the artisans. Continue to WomenWeave and the lanes where the clickety-clack of home looms is the town’s actual heartbeat, for a fuller picture of the living craft. Only after understanding the weave do you shop, now able to tell an authentic handloom Maheshwari from a mill-made imitation. In the afternoon, a Narmada boat cruise past the ghats and the fort from the water. Overnight stay in Maheshwar.
After breakfast, check out and drive the short distance to Sahastradhara, roughly 5 km, where the Narmada splits into hundreds of channels over black volcanic rock, a striking natural counterpoint to the town’s craft and history. Depending on time and interest, a last stop at the market for handloom pieces before transferring back toward Indore for your onward journey. Trip ends on departure.
