Day 1: Arrival in Chennai – Transfer to Kanchipuram

Arrive in Chennai and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Observe the full process from the stretched warp threads on the frame through the interlocking zari work to the finished cloth emerging from the pit loom. Continue to a natural dyeing unit where the silk yarn is prepared and coloured before weaving, a process that uses both chemical and traditional vegetable dyes depending on the workshop and the price point of the final cloth. Spend the afternoon at the Weavers Service Centre and a reputable silk cooperative showroom where the grading, pricing and authentication of Kanjivaram silk is explained before any purchase decision is made. Day 3: Kailasanathar Temple – Ekambareswarar Temple – Departure to Chennai

Start early with the Kailasanathar Temple, an eighth century Pallava period sandstone temple that is the oldest surviving structural temple in Kanchipuram and one of the finest examples of early Dravidian architecture in South India, its bas relief sculpture and the processional corridor around the main shrine representing a pivotal moment in the development of South Indian temple form before the Chola tradition superseded it. Continue to the Ekambareswarar Temple, one of the five elemental Shiva shrines of Tamil Nadu where the element of earth is represented, its thousand-pillared mandapa and the mango tree in the temple compound held sacred in the Shaivite tradition as the site of Shiva and Parvati’s marriage. After breakfast and check out, transfer back to Chennai for your departure.
