Day 1: Arrival in Berhampur – Long Ascent to Daringbadi

Arrive in Berhampur (Brahmapur) and meet our tour representative at the railway station. Set off for Daringbadi in the Kandhamal hills, roughly 115 to 125 km and around 4 hours by winding Ghat road, with an early start to reach the hills in daylight. Check in at the Daringbadi Nature Camp or a hill resort. Settle in by a bonfire as the temperature drops after dark. Overnight stay in Daringbadi.

Day 2: Daringbadi Sightseeing – Pine, Coffee and Valley Viewpoints

A full day among Daringbadi’s spread-out sights: the pine jungle and coffee and pepper plantations, the Emu farm at Kirikuti, Lover’s Point where the Doluri river winds through the valley, the Butterfly Park, and the sunset viewpoint. In peak winter, dawn can bring frost, rare anywhere else in Odisha. Overnight stay in Daringbadi.

Day 3: Transfer to Phulbani – Putudi Waterfall and the Hill Town

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Phulbani, the administrative headquarters of Kandhamal district, roughly 105 to 112 km and around 3 hours by road. Check in at a Phulbani hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Putudi Waterfall, about 15 km from town, and the Pillasalunki Dam just 3 km from the town centre. Overnight stay in Phulbani.

Day 4: The Long Descent – Phulbani to Rambha, Hills to the Chilika Lagoon

After an early breakfast, check out and begin the trip’s longest single transfer – Phulbani down through the Berhampur corridor to Rambha at the southern end of Chilika Lake, roughly 150 to 160 km and around 4 to 4.5 hours by road. Plan this as a full travel day with an early start. Check in at the OTDC Panthanivas or a lakeside resort. In the afternoon, set out by boat across the calm southern lagoon to the island cluster – Breakfast Island (Barkuda), Honeymoon Island, and a lake viewpoint – for a gentle close to a long day, with sunsets backed by the Eastern Ghats. Overnight stay in Rambha.

Day 5: Dawn Excursion to Vetnai – Blackbuck Grasslands

An early start for the drive to Vetnai, roughly 65 km and around 1.5 to 2 hours from Rambha, timed to reach the grasslands at first light when the resident blackbucks are most active. Walk the Bhetnoi-Balipadar grassland tracks at the foot of the Eastern Ghats, home to one of eastern India’s largest wild blackbuck populations, protected for over a century by the local community and recognised with the Biju Patnaik Wildlife Conservation Award – watch too for the peacocks sharing this open country. Return to Rambha by early afternoon and spend the rest of the day at leisure by the lake. Overnight stay in Rambha.

Day 6: Transfer to Gopalpur – Sea and Lighthouse

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Gopalpur-on-Sea, a short 40 to 45 km and around an hour by road. Check in at your beachfront hotel or the OTDC Panthanivas. Spend the afternoon on the calm, swimmable golden sand, ending at the colonial-era lighthouse for a view over town and the Bay of Bengal. Overnight stay in Gopalpur.

Day 7: Gopalpur at Leisure – Beach, Rest and Optional Rushikulya

A full, deliberately unhurried beach day – the trip’s real rest after a demanding first half. In turtle season, an optional excursion runs to the Rushikulya coast (about 45 km), subject to access restrictions and the unpredictable arribada. Otherwise, fresh Ganjam seafood and the old port-town character fill the day well. Overnight stay in Gopalpur.

Day 8: Gopalpur – Berhampur Departure

A final relaxed beach morning before breakfast. Check out and transfer to Berhampur, a short 16 km and around 30 to 40 minutes by road, in time for your onward train. Overnight journey onward.
