Day 1: Arrival in Balasore – Transfer to Similipal – Evening at the Gate

Arrive in Balasore and meet our tour representative at the railway station. Transfer to the Similipal area via Baripada, roughly 82 km and around 2 to 2.5 hours by road to the Pithabata gate — the entry point best suited to travellers coming from Balasore and Kolkata. Check in at a nature camp or resort near Baripada or Jashipur. Collect and confirm your safari permit and authorised 4×4 vehicle booking for the following morning; Similipal admits a capped number of vehicles a day, so this is worth having locked in before arrival. Day 2: Pithabata Zone Safari – Core Forest and the Waterfalls

Enter through the Pithabata zone in the early morning window (typically 5:00 to 6:00 am), moving through dense Sal forest, open grassland and river valleys. Watch for elephants, gaur, sambar and barking deer, peacocks, and Similipal’s rich birdlife; this is also the only reserve on Earth with a wild population of melanistic “black” tigers, though any tiger sighting is rare and never guaranteed. Continue to Barehipani Falls, one of India’s highest waterfalls at over 200 metres, and nearby Joranda Falls, both under a strict 3:00 pm exit rule. Return for the evening. Day 3: Second Zone – Jamuani or Gudgudia, Pine Forest and Deeper Forest

A second full safari day, deliberately routed through a different zone from Day 2 to widen the ground covered and improve the odds across the reserve — Jamuani or Gudgudia, both accessed from the Jashipur side, offering different terrain including the Gudgudia pine forest, a striking change from the Sal-dominated Pithabata zone. This is the day that makes the extra night worthwhile: a second, different stretch of forest rather than repeating the first day’s route. Depending on the season and local advice, the afternoon can include a visit to a nearby tribal hamlet on the reserve’s fringe for a brief, respectful look at the indigenous communities who share this landscape, arranged through the local guide rather than approached independently. Day 4: Final Dawn Safari – Balasore Departure

An early final safari for one more pass through the forest and any wildlife still on the list. Return for breakfast, check out, and transfer back to Balasore via Baripada, around 82 km and 2 to 2.5 hours by road, in time for your onward train. Overnight journey onward.
