Trace Buddhism’s journey across 7N/8D Madhya Pradesh Buddhist Circuit Tour, from the painted viharas of Bagh and the iconic Great Stupa of Sanchi to the remote satellite stupas, Bharhut’s historic site, and tranquil Deur Kothar, ending near Khajuraho. This 7N/8D Madhya Pradesh Buddhist Circuit Tour reveals layered heritage, quiet pilgrimage landscapes, and enduring spiritual legacies in Madhya Pradesh.
Arrive in Indore and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Indore is the western gateway to the circuit and the nearest airport for the Bagh caves. Transfer toward the Dhar / Bagh region and check in. This is a genuine transfer-and-arrival day, built as one, not padded with sightseeing. If time and interest allow, an evening orientation to the region’s history sets up the trail ahead. Overnight stay near Dhar / Bagh.
After an early breakfast, visit the Bagh Caves, a group of nine rock-cut Buddhist monuments on the southern slopes of the Vindhyas, on the seasonal Baghani stream, dating to around the 5th-6th century, renowned for their mural paintings (many originals now conserved in the Gwalior museum, with copies shown on site). These are viharas and prayer halls carved by monks, the western bookend of MP’s Buddhist story. The caves lie about 97 km from Dhar and are reached only by road with no separate public transport, so a private vehicle is essential. Return toward Dhar or begin the transfer toward the centre depending on timings. Overnight stay near Dhar / Indore.
After breakfast, make the long transfer east toward the Sanchi region, routed through or past Bhopal, roughly a full travel day given the distance across the state. This is a transfer day by design; the reward is the three days of concentrated Buddhist heritage that follow. Check in at Sanchi or Bhopal. If arrival is early enough, an evening visit to the Sanchi light-and-sound show. Overnight stay in Sanchi / Bhopal.
The heart of the circuit. After breakfast, explore the Sanchi complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Great Stupa commissioned under Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, its four carved toranas among the finest early Buddhist art anywhere, the Ashoka pillar, and the hilltop monastery and temple ruins. Continue to the Sanchi Archaeological Museum for the recovered sculptures and relics. In the afternoon, the nearby Udayagiri rock-cut caves and the old town of Vidisha. Overnight stay in Sanchi / Bhopal.
A day most Buddhist tours never include, and the circuit’s quiet highlight. Visit the ring of ancient stupa sites around Sanchi, all within about 20 km and all contemporaries of the Great Stupa: Satdhara above its stream to the west, Sonari to the south-west where relic caskets were found, and Andher and Murel Khurd to the south-east, whose inscriptions name Buddhist teachers of Ashoka’s era. These are remote, atmospheric, and now served by approach roads and interpretation centres built under the state’s Buddhist-circuit programme. A knowledgeable local guide and driver are essential here. Overnight stay in Sanchi / Bhopal.
After breakfast, make the transfer east toward Satna, a long travel day across the state, the circuit’s eastern leg. Bharhut, in Satna district, was one of the earliest and most important stupa sites of the Shunga period (mid-2nd century BCE). Be clear-eyed here: the great stupa itself is largely gone, its magnificent sculpted railings and gateways removed long ago to the Indian Museum in Kolkata, so what remains on site is the location and its historical weight rather than standing monuments. For the serious pilgrim and historian, standing where Bharhut stood still matters. Overnight stay in Satna.
After an early breakfast, continue to Deur Kothar in Rewa district, the eastern bookend, an archaeological site rediscovered in 1982 with some of the earliest Buddhist stupas in the Vindhya region, three large brick stupas and dozens of smaller stone ones from Ashoka’s era, alongside far older rock art. Inscriptions here record a master-disciple succession only twelve generations from the Buddha. The site is peaceful, cliff-edge, and genuinely undeveloped, with minimal facilities. In the afternoon, transfer toward Khajuraho (or Jabalpur) for the onward departure point. Overnight stay in Khajuraho.
After breakfast, check out. Time permitting before your flight or train, an optional visit to the Khajuraho temples, a fitting non-Buddhist coda that also connects to Bharhut as a day-trip in the standard literature. Transfer to the airport or railway station for onward journey. Trip ends on departure.
Bagh Caves (Rock-Cut Viharas & Murals), Sanchi Great Stupa & Toranas (UNESCO), Ashoka Pillar, Sanchi Archaeological Museum, Udayagiri Caves, Satdhara · Sonari · Andher · Murel Khurd Stupas, Bharhut Stupa Site (Satna), Deur Kothar Stupas & Rock Art (Rewa), Optional Khajuraho.

The 7N/8D Madhya Pradesh Buddhist Circuit Tour arranged by Ocean6 Holidays Travel Agent was one of the most meaningful heritage journeys I have experienced. Sanchi was magnificent, but what made this itinerary special was visiting lesser-known sites such as Satdhara, Sonari, Andher and Deur Kothar. Bagh Caves and their Buddhist artistic history were another major highlight. The itinerary was thoughtfully planned despite the considerable distances involved, and our driver and local guides made the journey comfortable and informative. Highly recommended for travellers genuinely interested in Buddhist history, archaeology and ancient India.
