Trace the Buddha’s final journeys on this immersive 3N/4D Shravasti & Kushinagar Buddhist Tour, exploring sacred sites in Shravasti and Kushinagar linked to his monsoon retreats, enlightenment legacy, and Mahaparinirvana. This thoughtfully paced 3N/4D Shravasti & Kushinagar Buddhist Tour blends key stupas, monasteries, and serene rural landscapes into a compact yet deeply reflective pilgrimage experience.
On arrival in Lucknow (by flight or train), you will be received and transferred to Shravasti (approximately 170 km, indicatively 4 to 4.5 hours by road via Balrampur). After check-in and some rest, proceed to Jetavana Monastery, the site where the Buddha is believed to have spent nineteen of his forty-five monsoon retreats, among the most significant Buddhist archaeological sites in India. Walk among the excavated foundations of ancient viharas and stupas as the light softens toward evening. Overnight stay in Shravasti.
A guided morning through Shravasti’s remaining sites: the Anandabodhi Tree, said to be grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya, and the Angulimala Stupa, marking the site associated with the Buddha’s transformation of the bandit Angulimala. Depending on interest, a stop at one or two of the international monasteries built by Buddhist countries (Thai, Sri Lankan, Myanmarese, and others maintain a presence here) adds context to Shravasti’s living role as a pilgrimage site rather than only a ruin. After lunch, check out and transfer to Kushinagar (approximately 200 km, indicatively 5 to 6 hours by road via Balrampur and Gorakhpur, since there is no direct expressway connecting the two). Check in on arrival. Overnight stay in Kushinagar.
A full day at the site of the Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana (final passing). Begin at the Mahaparinirvana Temple, home to the large reclining Buddha statue marking the spot of his death, followed by the adjoining Mahaparinirvana Stupa. Continue to the Ramabhar Stupa, believed to mark the Buddha’s cremation site, a quieter and more contemplative stop than the main temple. In the afternoon, visit a selection of Kushinagar’s international monasteries, built and maintained by Buddhist communities from Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and elsewhere, each reflecting its home country’s architectural style, a genuinely distinctive feature of this site compared to most pilgrimage circuits in India. Overnight stay in Kushinagar.
After breakfast, check out and proceed to Gorakhpur (approximately 50 km, indicatively 1 to 1.5 hours). Depending on the client’s departure time, a short stop at the Gorakhnath Temple en route adds a final point of interest before transfer to Gorakhpur Airport or railway station for onward travel.
Jetavana Monastery Ruins, Anandabodhi Tree, Angulimala Stupa, Mahaparinirvana Temple and Reclining Buddha Statue, Ramabhar Stupa (Cremation Site), International Monastery Circuit at Kushinagar, Optional Gorakhnath Temple Stop.

I chose Ocean6 Holidays Travel Agent because I wanted a tour that combined Buddhist history with enough time to actually experience each sacred place. The 3N/4D itinerary delivered exactly that. Our visit to Jetavana, Angulimala Stupa and the international monasteries was fascinating, while Kushinagar had a completely different, deeply contemplative character. Standing before the reclining Buddha was an unforgettable moment. The trip was organised professionally from Lucknow arrival through to our Gorakhpur departure.
Our Shravasti and Kushinagar tour with Ocean6 Holidays Travel Agent was a deeply peaceful experience. Jetavana Monastery was the highlight for us-the quiet ruins and Anandabodhi Tree created a wonderful atmosphere for reflection. Kushinagar was equally moving, especially the reclining Buddha at Mahaparinirvana Temple and Ramabhar Stupa. The itinerary was well paced, and the transfers were smoothly coordinated. A beautiful Buddhist pilgrimage for anyone interested in the life and teachings of Lord Buddha.
