Day 1: Arrival in Jharsuguda – Transfer to Debrigarh – Evening Safari

Arrive in Jharsuguda and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, roughly 70 km and around 1.5 to 2 hours by road, bordered by the vast Hirakud reservoir. Check in at the Debrigarh Nature Camp or the more comfortable Eco Retreat Hirakud. Head out for the afternoon safari through dry deciduous forest opening onto the reservoir’s edge. Overnight stay at Debrigarh.

Day 2: Morning Safari – Hirakud Dam – Evening Boat Ride to Bat Island

An early morning safari through terrain once used by the freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai during his rebellion against British rule. Watch for the endangered four-horned antelope, or Chousingha, a genuine specialty of this forest, alongside sloth bear, leopard and wild boar. In the afternoon, visit a viewpoint over the Hirakud Dam. As evening falls, take a boat ride across the reservoir to Bat Island. Overnight stay at Debrigarh.

Day 3: The Long Transfer – Debrigarh to Mainpat

After an early breakfast, check out and begin the trip’s longest and most demanding single transfer, crossing from Odisha into Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district via Jharsuguda and on to Ambikapur, roughly 280 to 290 km in total and realistically 6.5 to 7 hours by road. Plan this as a full day devoted entirely to the road, with a very early start and no activity attempted alongside it. Arrive in Mainpat in the evening and check in at a Swiss tent camp or guesthouse on the plateau. Overnight stay in Mainpat.

Day 4: Mainpat – The “Shimla of Chhattisgarh” and Its Tibetan Settlement

A full day exploring Mainpat, a plateau at roughly 3,500 feet dotted with Tibetan settlement villages established here since 1959. Visit the Thakpo Shedupling Monastery, home to old thangkas, wall murals and a striking solar-powered cooker. Continue to Tiger Point, a waterfall on the Mahadev Muda River locally said to roar like a tiger as it hits the rocks below, and, if time and interest allow, the region’s genuine geological curiosities – Jaljali, a patch of spongy ground that visibly trembles underfoot, and the Ulta Pani, where a stream appears to defy gravity and flow uphill. Overnight stay in Mainpat.

Day 5: Mainpat – Jharsuguda Departure

After breakfast, check out and begin the long transfer back to Jharsuguda, roughly 280 to 290 km and around 6.5 to 7 hours by road, in time for your onward flight or train.
