Day 1: Arrival in Bangalore – Transfer to Emerald

Arrive in Bangalore and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Emerald, driving south through Mysuru and Mettupalayam before climbing the Nilgiri ghat road via Coonoor and continuing through Ooty and descending into the Emerald valley on the far side of the plateau. The drive takes approximately 7 to 7.5 hours and the approach through the Kundah range announces a quieter and less visited corner of the Nilgiris well before the lake comes into view. Emerald sits in a basin surrounded by tea slopes, shola patches and the Emerald reservoir, and the change in character from Ooty town is immediate and significant. Check in at your stay in the Emerald area by early evening. Spend the remaining light beside Emerald Lake as the mist comes in off the surrounding hills. Overnight stay in Emerald.

Day 2: Avalanche Lake, Red Hills and Emerald Backwaters

After an early breakfast, drive to Avalanche Lake and walk the shola trail alongside it, subject to forest entry conditions. The trail runs through dense shola forest with good birding along the stream edges. Return and continue to Red Hills, the open reservoir above Emerald with wide views across the Kundah catchment and the grassland that flanks it. Spend the afternoon along the Emerald backwater edge on a nature walk, reading animal tracks, bird activity and the water margin ecosystem at ground level. End the day at the Emerald Dam viewpoint as the light fades over the reservoir. Overnight stay in Emerald.

Day 3: Upper Bhavani and Kundah Catchment

After an early breakfast, report at the forest check post for the drive to Upper Bhavani. The route runs through Red Hills and the Kundah catchment, past Porthimund and Parson’s Valley reservoirs, into the high-altitude grassland at the Mukurthi National Park fringe. Spend the morning at Upper Bhavani Lake and the shola-grassland edges where Nilgiri tahr, sambar and Nilgiri langur are occasionally seen. Return by the permitted exit time and spend the late afternoon at the Toda settlement at Bikkapathi Mund near Emerald, one of the more accessible Toda communities in the Nilgiris where the distinctive barrel-vaulted stone and thatch architecture of the Toda mand is still intact. Overnight stay in Emerald.

Day 4: Yelanalli Tea Slopes – Korakundah – Departure to Bangalore

Start early with a morning walk through the Yelanalli tea slopes above Emerald, covering the plucking fields and the shade tree lines before the day heats up. Continue to Korakundah Tea Estate, one of the highest tea estates in the world, for a final look across the Kundah range before breakfast and check out. Transfer back to Bangalore via Ooty, Coonoor and Mettupalayam, approximately 360 to 380 km and 7 to 7.5 hours, for your departure.
