Day 1: Lucknow to the Girwa

After breakfast in Lucknow, depart for Katarniaghat (approximately 230 km, indicatively 5 to 5.5 hours by road, close to the Nepal border in Bahraich district). This is a long transfer and worth naming as one; an early start is essential to arrive with daylight left. Check in to your forest lodge by mid-to-late afternoon. Depending on arrival time, a short evening walk around the lodge grounds or a visit to the Girwa River viewpoint eases you into the setting before the first proper safari the next morning. Overnight stay at Katarniaghat.

Day 2: Jeep Safari and River Safari

An early morning jeep safari into the core zone, Katarniaghat forming part of the wider Dudhwa Tiger Reserve landscape, with a chance of tiger, though this is a genuine possibility rather than a probability here. More reliably, the reserve’s grasslands support one of India’s healthiest populations of swamp deer (barasingha), alongside good numbers of spotted deer, and consistent birdlife. Return to the lodge for breakfast and a midday rest through the heat. In the afternoon, a boat safari on the Girwa River is the reserve’s other headline experience: gharial basking on the sandbanks, the Gangetic river dolphin, and marsh mugger crocodile, in a river stretch considered one of the better sites in India for all three. Evening at leisure at the lodge. Overnight stay at Katarniaghat.

Day 3: Final Safari and Return to Lucknow

An early final jeep or boat safari, whichever the client has had less of, followed by breakfast and check-out. Transfer back to Lucknow (approximately 230 km, indicatively 5 to 5.5 hours), timed against onward travel.
