Day 1: Agra to the Ravines

After breakfast in Agra, depart for the Chambal region (approximately 60 to 70 km, indicatively 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the exact lodge location and road conditions through the Bah tehsil). The drive itself is through the rural Uttar Pradesh, ravine country, a landscape rarely seen on a standard Agra visit. Check in to your riverside lodge by early afternoon. After lunch, take a short orientation walk around the lodge grounds and village, followed by an evening boat safari on the Chambal River as the light softens, the best time to spot gharial basking on the sandbanks. Overnight stay on the Chambal riverbank.

Day 2: Full Day on the River

An early morning boat safari, when birdlife activity is at its peak: look for the Indian skimmer, a genuinely rare and localised species for which the Chambal is one of the most reliable sites in India, alongside black-bellied terns, ruddy shelduck in season, and a range of resident and migratory waterbirds. Return to the lodge for breakfast. Midday is free, best spent resting through the heat rather than filling with activity. In the afternoon, a second boat safari focuses on the Chambal’s two headline species: the gharial, a fish-eating crocodilian found almost nowhere else at this population density, and the Gangetic river dolphin, shier and harder to spot but present in these waters. A village walk or a visit to a local landowning family’s home, where arranged, adds context to the region’s history, including its long association with dacoits (the Chambal ravines were the country’s most notorious badlands well into the 1980s), now a settled and safe area but still part of what makes this place distinctive. Overnight stay on the Chambal riverbank.

Day 3: Final Safari and Return to Agra

An early final boat safari to use the best light and quietest water of the day, followed by breakfast and check-out. Transfer back to Agra (approximately 60 to 70 km, indicatively 2 to 2.5 hours), timed against onward travel or a same-day Taj Mahal visit if the schedule allows.
