Day 1: Arrival in Berhampur – Transfer to Mahendragiri

Arrive in Berhampur (Brahmapur) and meet our tour representative at the railway station. Set off for Mahendragiri, the second-highest peak in Odisha at 1,501 metres, roughly 85 to 100 km and around 3 to 4 hours by road via Tumba to the Burakhat Pass at the mountain’s base. The final 10 to 12 km climb to the top is a winding hairpin road requiring a vehicle with good ground clearance; road conditions have improved considerably in recent years but the ascent remains genuinely demanding. Check in at the Mahendragiri Nature Camp, a simple cluster of cottages near the summit. Spend the evening at altitude, in the quiet, cold air of a working ashram community rather than a resort – a genuinely still, contemplative first night. Overnight stay at Mahendragiri.

Day 2: The Summit – Ancient Temples and the Triple Peaks

A full day at the top of Mahendragiri, revered in the Mahabharata and the Brahmanda Purana as the site where the sage Parasurama meditated, and referred to in the Ramayana as Mahendra Parvat. Visit the ancient temples on the summit, said to have been built by the Pandavas, spread across the mountain’s three distinct peaks. This is treated locally as a religious site – a Sanjibani Kshetra – rather than a casual picnic spot, and the atmosphere reflects that: quiet, unhurried, and best approached with the same respect the local ashram community gives it. Weather here changes quickly and without warning, with cloud and clear sky alternating through the day; patience is often rewarded with a clearing view over the Eastern Ghats and the Mahendratanaya valley below. Day 3: Gandahati Waterfall – Berhampur Departure

After breakfast, check out and descend, stopping en route at Gandahati Waterfall, roughly 30 km from Mahendragiri, one of the few in the region that flows year-round rather than only after monsoon. Continue the transfer back to Berhampur, roughly 85 to 100 km and 3 to 4 hours by road, in time for your onward train. Overnight journey onward.
