From the towering vimana of Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur to the artisanal bronze workshops and aromatic degree coffee of Kumbakonam, this curated 3N/4D Thanjavur & Kumbakonam Tour immerses you in the spiritual, artistic and cultural legacy of the Cauvery delta.
Arrive in Chennai and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Thanjavur, driving south along the Grand Southern Trunk Road through Villupuram and Trichy before entering the Cauvery delta at its western edge. The drive takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours and the approach into Thanjavur through the flat paddy landscape of the delta, with the vimana of the Brihadeeswarar Temple visible from several kilometres away on the plain, is one of the more quietly dramatic arrivals in South India. Check in at your stay in Thanjavur by early evening. Spend the evening at the Brihadeeswarar Temple complex for the evening puja, when the inner sanctum rituals draw the local congregation and the granite vimana catches the last of the daylight before the lamps are lit. Overnight stay in Thanjavur.
After an early breakfast, begin the day with a morning visit to the Brihadeeswarar Temple before the crowd builds, the best light on the vimana and the Nandi monolith falls between 7 and 9 AM. Continue to the Thanjavur Maratha Palace complex, a sprawling structure built over successive centuries by the Nayaks and Marathas above the original Chola fortifications, and the Saraswathi Mahal Library within the palace, one of the oldest libraries in Asia with a collection of palm leaf manuscripts and early printed texts that spans Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi scholarship across several centuries. Spend the afternoon at the Thanjavur Art Gallery, which holds one of the finest collections of Chola bronze sculpture outside a national museum, and a traditional Tanjore painting workshop where the gold leaf and precious stone inlay technique specific to this town is still practised by hereditary artists. End the day with a walk through the old Thanjavur market streets and the temple tank at dusk. Overnight stay in Thanjavur.
After breakfast and check out, drive to Darasuram and visit the Airavatesvara Temple, a twelfth century Chola masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site where the stone carving on the mandapa walls and the chariot-form base of the main shrine represent some of the finest surviving Chola craftsmanship. Continue to Kumbakonam and check in at your stay. Spend the afternoon at the Mahamaham Tank, the largest temple tank in Tamil Nadu, and walk the old town streets around the Kumbeshwara and Sarangapani Temples as the evening puja begins. Drive to Gangaikonda Cholapuram in the late afternoon, the capital built by Rajendra Chola I after his northern campaign, and visit the Brihadisvara Temple before the light fades over the delta plain. Return to Kumbakonam for the evening. Overnight stay in Kumbakonam.
Start early with a drive to Papanasam on the Cauvery river, where the river ghat and the surrounding delta landscape are at their most active in the early morning with farmers, washermen and temple-goers moving along the riverbank before the heat builds. Return to Kumbakonam for a visit to a traditional bronze casting workshop where the lost-wax process that has produced Chola bronzes for over a thousand years is still practised by hereditary artisans. Before departure, stop at a Kumbakonam degree coffee house and a traditional sweet shop for the filter coffee and the milk sweets for which this town is specifically known across Tamil Nadu. Transfer back to Chennai via the Grand Southern Trunk Road for your departure.
