Day 1: Arrival in Chennai – Transfer to Thanjavur

Arrive in Chennai and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Thanjavur, driving south along the Grand Southern Trunk Road through Villupuram and Trichy before entering the Cauvery delta at its western edge. The drive takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours and the approach into Thanjavur through the flat paddy landscape of the delta, with the vimana of the Brihadeeswarar Temple visible from several kilometres away on the plain, is one of the more quietly dramatic arrivals in South India. Check in at your stay in Thanjavur by early evening. Spend the evening at the Brihadeeswarar Temple complex for the evening puja, when the inner sanctum rituals draw the local congregation and the granite vimana catches the last of the daylight before the lamps are lit. Walk the old Thanjavur market streets and the temple tank perimeter as the evening settles. Overnight stay in Thanjavur.

Day 2: Thanjavur – Brihadeeswarar, Palace and Tanjore Arts

After an early breakfast, return to the Brihadeeswarar Temple for a morning visit before the crowd builds, the best light on the vimana and the Nandi monolith falling between 7 and 9 AM. Continue to the Thanjavur Maratha Palace complex, covering the Bell Tower, the Durbar Hall and the Saraswathi Mahal Library, one of the oldest libraries in Asia with a collection of palm leaf manuscripts and early printed texts spanning Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi scholarship across several centuries. Spend the afternoon at the Thanjavur Art Gallery, which holds one of the finest collections of Chola bronze sculpture outside a national museum, and a traditional Tanjore painting workshop where the gold leaf and precious stone inlay technique specific to this town is still practised by hereditary artists. End the day at the Schwartz Church within the palace precincts before a final walk through the old market streets. Overnight stay in Thanjavur.

Day 3: Darasuram – Kumbakonam – Transfer to Madurai

After an early breakfast, drive to Darasuram and visit the Airavatesvara Temple, a twelfth century Chola masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site where the stone carving on the mandapa walls and the chariot-form base of the main shrine represent some of the finest surviving Chola craftsmanship. Continue to Kumbakonam for a visit to the Mahamaham Tank, the largest temple tank in Tamil Nadu, and the Kumbeshwara Temple before continuing southwest towards Madurai. The drive from Kumbakonam to Madurai is approximately 180 to 200 km and 3.5 to 4 hours via Trichy or Dindigul. Check in at your stay in Madurai by early evening. Spend the evening at the Meenakshi Amman Temple for the evening puja and the Alangaram ritual, when the image of Lord Sundareswarar is carried in procession to the Devi’s chamber, one of the most intimate and specific nightly rituals in any South Indian temple. Overnight stay in Madurai.

Day 4: Madurai – Palaces, Tanks and Old City

After an early breakfast, visit Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, the largest temple tank in Madurai, a vast water body with a central island mandapa that is a quietly significant sacred space outside the float festival season. Continue to the Koodal Azhagar Temple, one of the most architecturally significant Vishnu shrines in Madurai and among the lesser-visited major temples in the old city. Spend the morning at the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, a seventeenth century structure of Indo-Saracenic grandeur whose courtyard and main hall give a clear sense of the Nayak court culture that shaped Madurai after the Vijayanagara period. In the afternoon, visit the Gandhi Memorial Museum at Tamukkam Palace before returning to the Meenakshi Amman Temple for a more detailed morning architectural visit, covering the Hall of a Thousand Pillars and the Golden Lotus Tank. End the day with a walk through the Madurai old city textile and flower market as the evening trade builds. Overnight stay in Madurai.

Day 5: Thiruparankundram – Transfer to Rameswaram

After an early breakfast, visit Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple on the southern outskirts of Madurai, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan carved into a granite hillside, before checking out and transferring to Rameswaram. The drive takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, crossing the Pamban Bridge over the Palk Strait with the Gulf of Mannar on one side and the Palk Strait on the other as the causeway approaches the island. Check in at your stay in Rameswaram by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the afternoon at the Ramanathaswamy Temple for an initial orientation visit, walking the full length of the 1200 metre pillar corridor before the evening puja begins. Return for the evening puja when the inner sanctum corridors fill with the sound of the nagaswaram and the congregation moves through the pillar corridor in the lamp light. Overnight stay in Rameswaram.

Day 6: Agnitheertham, Ramanathaswamy Temple and Dhanushkodi

After a pre-dawn start, visit Agnitheertham, the sacred bathing ghat on the eastern shore where pilgrims bathe in the sea before entering the Ramanathaswamy Temple, the light over the water and the congregation on the shore making this one of the more quietly powerful early morning experiences in Tamil Nadu. Return for the morning ritual at the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines and among the most significant pilgrimage sites in India, its corridor of carved pillars stretching over 1200 metres and forming the longest temple corridor in the country. Spend the morning completing the full corridor circuit and the twenty two theertham ritual if the traveller wishes to participate before continuing to Dhanushkodi in the afternoon. The ghost town at the southeastern tip of the island was abandoned after the 1964 cyclone and the ruins of the old railway station, church and post office sit in the open sand between the two water bodies with the submerged rocks of Adam’s Bridge visible on a clear day extending towards Sri Lanka. Return via Ariyaman Beach and Villoondi Theertham, a freshwater spring on the seashore held sacred in the Ramayana tradition. Overnight stay in Rameswaram.

Day 7: Kothandaramaswamy Temple – Abdul Kalam Memorial – Departure to Madurai

Start early with the Kothandaramaswamy Temple on the southeastern shore of the island, a shore temple facing the Gulf of Mannar where the sea comes close to the mandapa walls and the morning light across the water is among the better dawn experiences on the island. Continue to the Abdul Kalam Memorial and the house where the former President of India spent his early years in Rameswaram, a stop that connects the island to a significant and recent chapter of Indian public life. After breakfast and check out, transfer back to Madurai via the Pamban Bridge and Ramanathapuram for your departure.
