Day 1: Arrival in Bhubaneswar – Transfer to Satkosia – Evening on the Mahanadi

Arrive in Bhubaneswar and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Satkosia, roughly 130 km and around 3 hours by road, to either the Tikarpada side on the river’s northern bank or the Badmul side on the southern bank, depending on the accommodation chosen. Check in and spend the late afternoon at the river’s edge, where the Mahanadi cuts a 22 km gorge through the Eastern Ghats – one of Odisha’s most striking landscapes and genuinely underexplored. Settle in for a quiet evening; alcohol is not permitted inside the reserve or its nature camps. Overnight stay at Satkosia.

Day 2: Gorge Boat Safari – Gharials, Crocodiles and Birdlife

The heart of the trip. Set out by boat through the Satkosia gorge, where mugger crocodiles and the critically endangered gharial – a fish-eating crocodilian with a distinctive narrow snout – bask on the sandbanks, particularly reliable on a cool winter morning. Visit the Gharial Research and Conservation Unit (GRACU) at Tikarpada, one of India’s key gharial breeding and reintroduction programmes, to understand the conservation story behind the river. The gorge is also genuinely excellent for birds, with over 300 recorded species including the striking Indian Skimmer skimming low over the water. In the afternoon, take an optional guided nature trail through the Sal forest with a forest guard (permission arranged in advance through the Divisional Forest Officer), watching for chital, sambar and giant squirrel, and, with real luck, larger wildlife. Overnight stay at Satkosia.

Day 3: Second Boat Outing or Riverside Morning – Bhubaneswar Departure

A final morning on the river – either a second, quieter boat outing for different light and birdlife, or an unhurried walk along the sandbar and gorge viewpoints. After breakfast, check out and transfer back to Bhubaneswar, around 130 km and 3 hours by road, in time for your onward train or flight. Overnight journey onward.
