2N/3D Ooty Emerald Lake Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Coimbatore – Transfer to Emerald

Arrive in Coimbatore and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Emerald, driving northeast through Mettupalayam and climbing the Nilgiri ghat road via Coonoor before continuing through Ooty and descending into the Emerald valley on the far side of the plateau. The drive takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours and the approach through the Kundah range announces a quieter and less visited corner of the Nilgiris well before the lake comes into view. Emerald sits in a basin surrounded by tea slopes, shola patches and the Emerald reservoir, and the change in character from Ooty town is immediate and significant. Check in at your stay in the Emerald area by early afternoon. Spend the evening beside Emerald Lake as the mist comes in off the surrounding hills and the light drops over the water. Overnight stay in Emerald.

Day 2: Avalanche Lake, Red Hills and Emerald Backwaters

After an early breakfast, drive to Avalanche Lake and walk the shola trail alongside it, subject to forest entry conditions. The trail runs through dense shola forest with good birding along the stream edges. Return and continue to Red Hills, the open reservoir above Emerald with wide views across the Kundah catchment and the grassland that flanks it. Spend the afternoon along the Emerald backwater edge on a nature walk, reading animal tracks, bird activity and the water margin ecosystem at ground level. End the day at the Emerald Dam viewpoint as the light fades over the reservoir. Overnight stay in Emerald.

Day 3: Toda Settlement – Emerald Tea Slopes – Departure to Coimbatore

 Start early with a visit to the Toda settlement at Bikkapathi Mund near Emerald, one of the more accessible Toda communities in the Nilgiris where the distinctive barrel-vaulted stone and thatch architecture of the Toda mand is still intact. Continue through the Yelanalli tea slopes above Emerald for a morning walk through the plucking fields before breakfast and check out. Transfer back to Coimbatore via Ooty and the Coonoor ghat road for your departure.
