Day 1: Arrival in Bhubaneswar – Transfer to Mangalajodi – Afternoon Marsh Reconnaissance

Transfer to Mangalajodi on the northern edge of Chilika Lake, roughly 70 km and around 1.5 to 2 hours by road via NH16. Check in at the community ecotourism complex or a nearby eco-cottage. Use the late afternoon for a first, gentle outing — a short boat trip or a walk along the approach embankment, where resident birds line the channels and the light softens over the reeds. This first session is about reading the marsh and settling in, not chasing every species. Overnight stay in Mangalajodi.

Day 2: Dawn Boat Safari – The Full Mangalajodi Experience

The heart of the trip. Set out before sunrise, when the birds are most active and the mist still sits on the water, in a community-run country boat poled quietly along the reed-lined channels. This is Mangalajodi’s signature — the boat brings you within a few feet of birds that would flush anywhere else, because decades of community conservation have made them unafraid. Expect purple moorhens, godwits, herons, egrets, ibises, open-billed storks, kingfishers, terns and, in peak winter, dense flocks of northern migrants. The boatmen double as sharp local guides. Return through midday to rest, then take an optional second afternoon boat session for different light and a fresh set of species before the last boats come off the water by early afternoon. Day 3: Final Dawn Session – Bhubaneswar Departure

A last early boat session for the species still on the list and the best photographic light of the trip. Return for breakfast, check out, and transfer back to Bhubaneswar, around 70 km and 1.5 to 2 hours by road, in time for your onward journey. Overnight journey onward.
