Day 1: Kochi – Transfer to Kottayam & Kumarakom Backwater Edge

Meet our representative at Cochin International Airport or in Kochi and transfer to Kottayam, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by road, an easy run south through the plains with no hills. Kottayam sits between the Vembanad backwaters and the Western Ghats foothills, “the land of letters, latex and lakes,” a rubber-and-literacy heartland rather than a built-up tourist town. Check in near Kumarakom and spend the afternoon on the Vembanad water’s edge. Optional sunset canoe. Overnight in Kottayam/Kumarakom.

Day 2: Kottayam – Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Backwaters & Syrian Christian Heritage

A full day across Kottayam’s distinct offerings. Early morning at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the Vembanad shore, best at dawn, then a small-boat cruise through the quieter Kumarakom canals, calmer and greener than the Alleppey stretch. Afternoon into Kottayam’s Syrian Christian heritage, this is the heart of Kerala’s ancient Saint Thomas Christian community, with old churches such as the Cheriapally and Valiapally at Kottayam carrying Persian-cross and mural history most visitors never see. Overnight in Kottayam/Kumarakom.

Day 3: Kottayam – Departure to Kochi

After a slow breakfast, transfer back to Kochi, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by road, for onward departure. For clients continuing, Kottayam is the natural gateway upward to Thekkady and the hills, worth flagging as an onward option rather than a return.
