Day 1: Arrival in Jharsuguda – Transfer to Debrigarh – Evening Safari

Arrive in Jharsuguda and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, roughly 70 km and around 1.5 to 2 hours by road, bordered on the east and north by the vast Hirakud reservoir. Check in at the Debrigarh Nature Camp or the more comfortable Eco Retreat Hirakud, both in the buffer area near the Dhudorkusum entry gate. Head out for the afternoon safari in an open vehicle through dry deciduous forest that opens onto the reservoir’s edge, watching for spotted deer, sambar, Indian gaur and the varied birdlife the water draws. Overnight stay at Debrigarh.

Day 2: Morning Safari – Hirakud Dam – Evening Boat Ride to Bat Island

An early morning safari, the better window for activity, through terrain that once sheltered the freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai during his rebellion against British rule – his base at Barapathara lies within the sanctuary itself. Watch for the endangered four-horned antelope, or Chousingha, a genuine specialty of this forest, alongside sloth bear, leopard and wild boar, and take in the reservoir views that make Debrigarh distinctive among Odisha’s sanctuaries. In the afternoon, visit a viewpoint over the Hirakud Dam. As evening falls, take a boat ride across the reservoir to Bat Island – a quiet, unusual close to the day, watching the bats stir as the light fades. Overnight stay at Debrigarh.

Day 3: Final Morning Safari – Jharsuguda Departure

A last early safari for the birdlife and forest activity before the heat of the day. Return for breakfast, check out, and transfer back to Jharsuguda, roughly 70 km and around 1.5 to 2 hours by road, in time for your onward flight or train.
