Day 1: Bhubaneswar Temple Circuit – Transfer to Chandaka – Evening at the Reservoir

Meet our tour representative in Bhubaneswar and spend the morning on the city’s temple circuit – Lingaraj Temple, Mukteswara Temple, and the Khandagiri-Udayagiri rock-cut caves. In the afternoon, transfer to Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary, a short 20 to 25 km and around 45 minutes by road, and check in at the Deras or Godibari nature camp by the Deras reservoir. Spend the evening at the lake, with a campfire and a simple forest dinner. Overnight stay at Chandaka.

Day 2: Chandaka Safari – Long Transfer South to Balugaon (Chilika)

An early open-vehicle safari through the sanctuary’s mixed acacia, bamboo and semi-evergreen forest in search of the wild elephants Chandaka was created to protect, along with sambar, mugger crocodiles at the waterholes and, on a lucky day, leopard, with all activity concluding by 3:30 pm as the forest rules require. After lunch, check out and transfer south to Balugaon on the shores of Chilika Lake, roughly 100 to 120 km and around 3 hours by road – the base for tomorrow’s Vetnai and Mangalajodi excursion. This is a genuine travel day and should be planned as one. Overnight stay in Balugaon.

Day 3: Dawn at Vetnai – Blackbucks – Mangalajodi Birding

An early start for the drive to Vetnai, roughly 75 km and around 2 hours from Balugaon, timed to reach the grasslands at first light when the resident blackbucks are most active. Walk the Bhetnoi-Balipadar grassland tracks at the foot of the Eastern Ghats, home to one of eastern India’s largest wild blackbuck populations, protected for over a century by the local community and recognised with the Biju Patnaik Wildlife Conservation Award. Because Vetnai sits barely 9 km from Mangalajodi, continue on to the marsh for the late morning, walking the embankment and, season permitting, taking a short boat trip through the reed channels for the resident waterbirds. Return to Balugaon by evening. Overnight stay in Balugaon.

Day 4: Balugaon – Bhubaneswar Departure

A slow morning by the lake, with an optional short boat outing on Chilika’s northern waters before breakfast. Check out and transfer back to Bhubaneswar, around 100 to 120 km and 3 hours by road, in time for your onward train or flight. Overnight journey onward.
