Day 1: Arrival in Bhubaneswar – Transfer to Balugaon (Chilika) – Evening at Leisure

Arrive in Bhubaneswar and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Balugaon on the shores of Chilika Lake, roughly 100 km and around 2.5 hours by road – the nearest comfortable base for the Vetnai excursion, since Vetnai itself has no proper visitor accommodation. Check in at your lakeside hotel. Spend the evening at leisure by the lake, with an early night ahead of tomorrow’s dawn start. Overnight stay in Balugaon.

Day 2: Dawn at Vetnai – Blackbucks on the Grasslands – Mangalajodi Birding

An early start for the drive to Vetnai, roughly 75 km and around 2 hours from Balugaon, timed to reach the grasslands at first light when the blackbucks are most active and the day has not yet turned hot. Walk or drive slowly along the Bhetnoi-Balipadar grassland tracks at the foot of the Eastern Ghats, home to one of eastern India’s largest wild blackbuck populations, alongside peacocks that share the same open country. This is a village-protected landscape, not a fenced park – the local community has safeguarded the herds for over a century and was recognised for it with the Biju Patnaik Wildlife Conservation Award. Because Vetnai sits barely 9 km from Mangalajodi, continue on to the marsh for the late-morning or early-afternoon hours, walking the embankment and, season permitting, taking a short boat trip through the reed channels for the resident waterbirds. Return to Balugaon by evening. Overnight stay in Balugaon.

Day 3: Balugaon – Bhubaneswar Departure

A slow morning by the lake, with an optional short boat outing on Chilika’s northern waters before breakfast. Check out and transfer back to Bhubaneswar, around 100 km and 2.5 hours by road, in time for your onward train or flight. Overnight journey onward.
