Embark on an immersive wilderness and hill-country escape with the 8N/9D Masinagudi, Kotagiri, Vattakanal & Mudumalai Tour, beginning in the vibrant gateway of Bangalore. Traverse dry deciduous forests, shola patches, tea estates and dramatic escarpments while tracking wildlife and exploring quiet hill towns. This 8N/9D Masinagudi, Kotagiri, Vattakanal & Mudumalai Tour blends jeep safaris, nature walks and panoramic viewpoints into a balanced, nature-focused itinerary.
Arrive in Bangalore and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Masinagudi, driving south through Mysuru and into the Nilgiri Biosphere through the Sigur plateau forest corridor that connects Mudumalai, Nagarhole and Bandipur. The drive takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours and the final approach through Bokkapuram brings the dry deciduous forest right up to the road. Check in at your jungle stay on the Masinagudi fringe by late afternoon. Spend the evening on the property. The forest boundary is close enough that elephant, gaur and spotted deer are occasionally visible from the resort perimeter as the light drops. Overnight stay in Masinagudi.
After an early breakfast, head out for a morning jeep safari into Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The forest tracks through the dry teak and bamboo belt offer the best chance of sighting gaur, spotted deer, elephant, wild dog and occasionally leopard in the early hours. Return for lunch and spend the afternoon at Theppakadu Elephant Camp, where working elephants managed by the Forest Department have been part of this landscape for generations. In the late afternoon, drive to Moyar River viewpoint and the Sigur plateau edge for the evening light over the dry forest canopy. Overnight stay in Masinagudi.
After an early breakfast, head out for a second jeep safari or a naturalist-led drive through the Bokkapuram forest corridor and the Sigur plateau grassland edges before checkout. Drive from Masinagudi to Kotagiri via Ooty, climbing the 36 hairpin bends from the dry forest floor into the upper Nilgiris before crossing the plateau and descending towards the eastern escarpment. The transfer is approximately 80 to 90 km and 2.5 to 3 hours on mountain roads. Check in at your stay in Kotagiri by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day exploring Kotagiri town on foot, the quietest and least commercialised of the three Nilgiri hill towns. Overnight stay in Kotagiri.
After breakfast, drive to Karikaiyur, a small village perched above one of the least-visited waterfall valleys in the Nilgiris. Walk to Karikaiyur Waterfall viewpoint, a sheer drop of over 300 metres into the valley below, best seen before the afternoon mist closes in. Spend time on the grassland ridge above the fall before continuing to Kodanad Viewpoint, which offers one of the clearest unobstructed views across the Coimbatore plains on a clear morning. Return via Catherine Falls viewpoint, one of the tallest two-tier falls in the Nilgiris, before ending the day back at the property. Overnight stay in Kotagiri.
Start early with a walk through Longwood Shola, one of the better-preserved shola forest patches accessible from Kotagiri, where the canopy closes quickly and the birding is reliably good in the early morning hours. Return for breakfast and check out. Drive from Kotagiri to Vattakanal through the tea estate roads, approximately 35 to 40 km and 1.5 to 2 hours, one of the most pleasant mid-tour transfers in the Nilgiris. Vattakanal sits roughly 3 km beyond Kodaikanal town on a narrow road that drops below the plateau rim into a small valley of its own, and the change in character from the estate road is immediate. Check in at your stay by early afternoon. Spend the evening on the Dolphin Nose trail near the property, watching the western valley light shift before the mist closes in. Overnight stay in Vattakanal.
After an early breakfast, walk the Dolphin Nose trail from the property to the viewpoint, one of the better short walks on the plateau with a clear drop into the western escarpment and the Palani Hills forest below. Return and spend the afternoon at Pillar Rocks, three vertical granite columns rising sharply from the forest edge, and Guna Caves, the narrow rock fissures beneath the same formation. End the day at Green Valley View on the eastern escarpment before returning to the property for the evening. Overnight stay in Vattakanal.
After an early breakfast, visit Silent Valley View Point on the western edge of the plateau and La Saleth Church, a colonial-era hilltop church above Vattakanal with an unobstructed view across the valley and the plains below. Check out and descend from the Kodaikanal plateau via the 36 hairpin bends towards Masinagudi, one of the steepest and most dramatic descents in the Nilgiris. The transfer from Vattakanal to Mudumalai is approximately 90 to 100 km and 3 to 3.5 hours. Check in at your jungle stay on the Mudumalai fringe by early afternoon. Spend the late afternoon on a naturalist-led drive through the Sigur plateau and the Bokkapuram forest corridor. Overnight stay in Mudumalai.
After an early breakfast, head out for a morning jeep safari into Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, covering different forest tracks from the Day 2 safari where the naturalist recommends it. Return for lunch and spend the afternoon on a guided river walk or nature trail along the Moyar River edge, reading animal tracks, bird activity and the dry forest ecosystem at ground level. End the day watching the sunset over the Sigur plateau from a designated viewpoint on the forest fringe. Overnight stay in Mudumalai.
Start with an early morning jeep safari or a final nature walk around the resort boundary before the day heats up. After breakfast and check out, drive through Mudumalai and Gudalur before joining the Mysuru highway back to Bangalore, approximately 280 to 300 km and 5.5 to 6 hours. Transfer to Bangalore for your departure.
