Kalimpong is a serene hill station in West Bengal, famous for its stunning valley views, Buddhist monasteries, old churches, and Tibetan handicrafts. Located 50 minutes east of Darjeeling, Kalimpong lies at the foothills of the Shivalik ranges, at an altitude of 1250 meters, overlooking the scenic Teesta Valley.
Once a stronghold of Bhutanese rulers and their army until the 19th century, Kalimpong’s history is dotted with ancient Buddhist monasteries, churches, and revered temples, all reflecting its Bhutanese heritage before being taken over by the British. Must-visit places include the Jang Dong Palriffo Brang (Monastery) and Thongsa Gompa (Bhutanese Monastery). The vibrant flower markets are also worth exploring, especially for orchids and bright blossoms.
The Pine View Nursery in Kalimpong, located near the Teesta River, boasts the largest collection of cacti in Asia. Started by Mr. Mohan S Pradhan, the nursery spreads across 2 acres and houses over 1,500 species of exotic cacti from all over the world. Visitors can buy some of these unique cactus species as souvenirs. The nursery has a nearby resort where tourists can relax and enjoy refreshments.
Morgan House, built in the 1930s by Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, is an excellent example of colonial architecture. Known for its intriguing reputation as a haunted house, this mansion has been converted into a lodge under the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation. Surrounded by rolling hillocks, charming sunsets, and an old colonial town atmosphere, Morgan House is a popular destination for visitors.
Situated on the Durpindara Mountain, the estate provides sweeping views of the Kangchenjunga range and nearby valleys like Relli, Kapher, Deolo, and Labha.
Morgan House is situated opposite the Army Golf Club, en route to Durpin Monastery in West Kalimpong. You can hire a car from Kalimpong market to reach Morgan House.
Mangal Dham is a Hindu temple located on Relli Road in Kalimpong, built in memory of Guruji Shri Mangal Das Ji Maharaj. The main deity here is Lord Krishna. The temple features intricately embellished statues, a vibrant sanctuary, and lush gardens. On the ground floor is Guruji’s Samadhi, while the prayer hall is on the top floor, housing idols of Raj Shyamaji and Shri Guru Mangaldasji. Scenes from Krishna Leela are also depicted here.
The temple has undertaken many community initiatives, including a pilgrim center, gurukulam, hostel for girls, seva sadan hospital, and more. Visitors can stroll around the gardens, enjoying the colorful flowers.
Deolo Hill, at an elevation of about 2000 meters, provides one of the best panoramic views of Kalimpong. With viewpoints located at the ridges, it is the perfect spot for witnessing breathtaking sunrise and sunset vistas.
