Day 1: Arrival in Madurai – Transfer to Thanjavur

Arrive in Madurai and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Thanjavur, driving northeast through Trichy and into the Cauvery delta at its western edge. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and the landscape shifts gradually from the rocky Deccan fringe around Trichy into the flat paddy country of the delta as the road approaches Thanjavur, with the vimana of the Brihadeeswarar Temple appearing above the treeline well before the town. Check in at your stay by early afternoon. Spend the evening at the Brihadeeswarar Temple complex for the evening puja, when the inner sanctum rituals draw the local congregation and the granite vimana catches the last of the daylight before the lamps are lit. Day 2: Brihadeeswarar Temple, Palace and Tanjore Arts

After an early breakfast, return to the Brihadeeswarar Temple for a morning visit before the crowd builds. The best light on the vimana and the Nandi monolith falls between 7 and 9 AM and the architectural detail of the base frieze, the pilaster carvings and the circumambulatory passageway rewards a slower and more deliberate visit than the evening allows. Continue to the Thanjavur Maratha Palace complex, covering the Bell Tower, the Durbar Hall and the Saraswathi Mahal Library, one of the oldest libraries in Asia with a collection of palm leaf manuscripts and early printed texts spanning Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi scholarship across several centuries. Spend the afternoon at the Thanjavur Art Gallery, which holds one of the finest collections of Chola bronze sculpture outside a national museum, and a traditional Tanjore painting workshop where the gold leaf and precious stone inlay technique specific to this town is still practised by hereditary artists. End the day at the Schwartz Church, a late eighteenth century colonial church built by the Maratha king Serfoji II in honour of the Danish missionary Christian Friedrich Schwartz, a quietly significant monument that sits within the palace precincts and connects Thanjavur to a wider story than its Chola and Maratha heritage alone. Day 3: Darasuram – Cauvery Delta Villages – Departure to Madurai

Start early with a drive to Darasuram and the Airavatesvara Temple, a twelfth century Chola masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site approximately 4 km from Thanjavur where the stone carving on the mandapa walls and the chariot-form base of the main shrine represent some of the finest surviving Chola craftsmanship and where the crowd levels are a fraction of the Brihadeeswarar. Continue through the Cauvery delta villages on the return, stopping at a working paddy farm or a traditional weaving settlement if the season and access permit, before returning to Thanjavur for breakfast and check out. Transfer back to Madurai via Trichy for your departure.
