Day 1: Arrival in Balasore – Transfer to Similipal – Evening at the Gate

Arrive in Balasore and meet our tour representative at the railway station. Transfer to the Similipal Tiger Reserve area via Baripada, roughly 82 km and around 2 to 2.5 hours by road to the Pithabata gate — the entry point best suited to travellers coming from Balasore and Kolkata. Check in at a nature camp or resort near Baripada or Jashipur. Collect and confirm your safari permit and 4×4 vehicle booking for the following morning; Similipal admits a capped number of vehicles a day and requires an authorised, high-clearance safari vehicle, so this should ideally be confirmed well before arrival. Spend the evening settling in ahead of an early start. Overnight stay near Similipal.

Day 2: Full-Day Safari – Core Forest, Wildlife Zones and Waterfalls

The heart of the trip. Enter through the Pithabata or Jamuani/Gudgudia zone in the early morning window (safari vehicles typically enter 5:00 to 6:00 am), moving through dense Sal forest, open grassland meadows and river valleys that make up one of India’s largest tiger reserves. Watch for elephants, gaur, sambar and barking deer, peacocks, and Similipal’s many bird species; the reserve is also the only place on Earth with a wild population of melanistic “black” tigers, though sightings of any tiger are rare and never guaranteed. Continue to Barehipani Falls, one of India’s highest waterfalls at over 200 metres, and Joranda Falls nearby, both of which visitors must leave by 3:00 pm under forest rules. Exit before the afternoon closure, with an optional second short zone entry in the 2:00 to 3:00 pm window if the day’s permit allows. Overnight stay near Similipal.

Day 3: Optional Dawn Safari – Balasore Departure

An optional early-morning safari for a further chance at wildlife and a last look at the forest, permit and vehicle allowing. After breakfast, check out and transfer back to Balasore via Baripada, around 82 km and 2 to 2.5 hours by road, in time for your onward train. Overnight journey onward.
