Step back into the romance of imperial India with the 2N/3D Burhanpur Mughal Heritage Tour, tracing stories of Mumtaz Mahal, riverside forts and sacred shrines. Discover Shahi Qila, Jama Masjid, Dargah-e-Hakimi and the legendary Asirgarh Fort, the “Key to the Deccan.” This 2N/3D Burhanpur Mughal Heritage Tour perfectly blends architecture, spirituality and history.
Arrive in Indore and meet our tour representative at the railway station & transfer to Burhanpur. Burhanpur sits on the main Delhi-Mumbai rail line, so it is reachable by direct train, and lies about 180 km south of Indore for road or fly-in clients. Check in at your hotel, then head to the Shahi Qila, the riverside royal fort on the Tapti, the town’s central monument. Though largely in ruins, its highlight endures: the Persian-style hammam, the royal bath built for Mumtaz Mahal, with its painted honeycomb ceiling, one panel of which local tradition holds inspired the Taj Mahal. Spend the late afternoon at the fort and along the Tapti before an evening walk through the old-town lanes. Overnight stay in Burhanpur.
After breakfast, visit the Jama Masjid, the elegant Farooqui-era mosque of 1589 known for its inscribed arches and calm courtyard, later completed under Akbar. Continue to the Dargah-e-Hakimi, the white-marble Dawoodi Bohra shrine complex set in gardens, a major pilgrimage site drawing Bohra visitors from across the world. Explore the old city’s mosques, tombs and markets, and, for those interested, the Ahukhana (“deer park”) across the Tapti, the former Mughal hunting retreat linked to Mumtaz Mahal. This is a day of layered Mughal, Farooqui and Bohra heritage at close range. Overnight stay in Burhanpur.
After an early breakfast, check out and drive to Asirgarh Fort, approximately 20 km, the hill fortress in the Satpura range once called the “Key to the Deccan” for the pass it guarded between the Narmada and Tapti valleys. Explore the ramparts, the ruined mosque, and the Gupteshwar Mahadev Shiva temple within, with wide views over the plains, the road runs almost to the entrance, so the climb is optional. Return toward your departure point at Indore for your onward journey. Trip ends on departure.

Our 2N/3D Burhanpur Mughal Heritage Tour with Ocean6 Holidays Travel Agent was a fascinating journey into a part of Indian history that deserves much more attention. Shahi Qila and Mumtaz Mahal’s Hammam were the highlights for us, especially the beautiful Persian-style ceiling. Jama Masjid and the old lanes of Burhanpur added so much character to the experience. The itinerary was comfortable, well planned and never felt rushed. Asirgarh Fort on the final day was the perfect conclusion, with its history and wonderful views. A memorable heritage trip for anyone interested in Mughal architecture and lesser-known historical destinations.
If you enjoy exploring places beyond the usual tourist circuit, Burhanpur is a wonderful surprise. We booked the 2N/3D tour through Ocean6 Holidays Travel Agent and loved how much history was packed into such a short trip. Walking through Shahi Qila, seeing the hammam associated with Mumtaz Mahal, exploring the old city and spending time near the Tapti gave the destination a very different atmosphere from mainstream heritage cities. Asirgarh Fort was spectacular and easily one of our favourite experiences. A great choice for couples looking for an unusual weekend heritage getaway.
We travelled to Burhanpur as a family and had a wonderful experience arranged by Ocean6 Holidays Travel Agent. The three-day itinerary offered a good combination of history, architecture, spirituality and sightseeing. We particularly enjoyed the peaceful Dargah-e-Hakimi complex and exploring Shahi Qila beside the Tapti River. The visit to Asirgarh Fort was another memorable experience, and the road access made the excursion manageable for our family. Everything was organised smoothly, making this an enjoyable short heritage holiday.
