Day 1: Arrival in Coimbatore – Transfer to Madurai

Arrive in Coimbatore and meet our tour representative at the airport or railway station. Transfer to Madurai, driving southeast through Dindigul and into the Vaigai river basin before the city announces itself through the gopurams of the Meenakshi Amman Temple rising above the roofline from several kilometres away. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and is one of the more comfortable Day 1 transfers in the Tamil Nadu series, delivering the traveller to Madurai by early afternoon with a full first evening available. Check in at your stay in Madurai by early afternoon. Spend the afternoon at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the largest and most architecturally complex temple complexes in India, its eleven gopurams rising above the city in tiers of painted stucco sculpture that have oriented Madurai’s geography for centuries. Spend time in the Hall of a Thousand Pillars and the Golden Lotus Tank before walking the old city streets around the temple perimeter. End the day at the Meenakshi Temple for the evening puja and the Alangaram ritual, when the image of Lord Sundareswarar is carried in procession to the Devi’s chamber, one of the most intimate and specific nightly rituals in any South Indian temple. Day 2: Madurai – Palaces, Tanks and Old City

After an early breakfast, visit Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, the largest temple tank in Madurai, a vast water body with a central island mandapa that is a quietly significant sacred space outside the float festival season. Continue to the Koodal Azhagar Temple, one of the most architecturally significant Vishnu shrines in the old city. Spend the morning at the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, a seventeenth century structure of Indo-Saracenic grandeur whose courtyard and main hall give a clear sense of the Nayak court culture that shaped Madurai after the Vijayanagara period. In the afternoon, visit the Gandhi Memorial Museum at Tamukkam Palace before returning to the Meenakshi Amman Temple for a detailed architectural visit covering the Hall of a Thousand Pillars and the Golden Lotus Tank in greater depth. End the day with a walk through the Madurai old city textile and flower market as the evening trade builds. Overnight stay in Madurai.

Day 3: Thiruparankundram – Transfer to Rameswaram

After an early breakfast, visit Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple on the southern outskirts of Madurai, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan carved into a granite hillside, before checking out and transferring to Rameswaram. The drive takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, crossing the Pamban Bridge over the Palk Strait with the Gulf of Mannar on one side and the Palk Strait on the other as the causeway approaches the island. The landscape shifts progressively from the dry Madurai hinterland through the coastal scrub and salt flat country of Ramanathapuram district before the sea appears on both sides simultaneously at the Pamban crossing. Check in at your stay in Rameswaram by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the afternoon at the Ramanathaswamy Temple for an initial orientation visit, walking the full length of the 1200 metre pillar corridor before the evening puja begins. Return for the evening puja when the inner sanctum corridors fill with the sound of the nagaswaram and the congregation moves through the pillar corridor in the lamp light. Overnight stay in Rameswaram.

Day 4: Agnitheertham, Ramanathaswamy Temple and Dhanushkodi

After a pre-dawn start, visit Agnitheertham, the sacred bathing ghat on the eastern shore where pilgrims bathe in the sea before entering the Ramanathaswamy Temple, the light over the water and the congregation on the shore making this one of the more quietly powerful early morning experiences in Tamil Nadu. Return for the morning ritual at the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines and among the most significant pilgrimage sites in India, its corridor of carved pillars stretching over 1200 metres and forming the longest temple corridor in the country. Spend the morning completing the full corridor circuit and the twenty two theertham ritual if the traveller wishes to participate before continuing to Dhanushkodi in the afternoon. The ghost town at the southeastern tip of the island was abandoned after the 1964 cyclone and the ruins of the old railway station, church and post office sit in the open sand between the two water bodies with the submerged rocks of Adam’s Bridge visible on a clear day extending towards Sri Lanka. Return via Ariyaman Beach and Villoondi Theertham before ending the evening at the Kothandaramaswamy Temple on the southeastern shore. Overnight stay in Rameswaram.

Day 5: Abdul Kalam Memorial – Tiruchendur – Transfer to Kanyakumari

After an early breakfast, visit the Abdul Kalam Memorial and the house where the former President of India spent his early years in Rameswaram before checking out and beginning the transfer to Kanyakumari. The drive is approximately 320 to 340 km and 5.5 to 6 hours via Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli. Stop at Tiruchendur on the route, home to the Subrahmanya Temple, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan and the only one situated directly on the seashore, where the temple tower rises above the Bay of Bengal and the sound of the sea accompanies the puja. Continue to Kanyakumari and check in at your stay by early evening. Spend the evening at the Kanyakumari shoreline where the confluence of the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meets the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent, and the Vivekananda Rock Memorial is visible offshore in the last of the daylight. Overnight stay in Kanyakumari.

Day 6: Kanyakumari – Vivekananda Rock, Thiruvalluvar Statue and Sacred Cape

After an early start, visit the Bhagavathy Amman Temple at Kanyakumari, the presiding deity of the cape whose sacred geography is understood in the Hindu tradition as the southernmost point at which the three seas meet before a single divine source. Take the ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, built on the rock where Swami Vivekananda is believed to have meditated before his address to the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893, and the adjacent Thiruvalluvar Statue, a 133 foot stone sculpture of the Tamil poet-philosopher whose Thirukkural remains one of the most widely read texts in Tamil literary history. Return to the shore and spend the afternoon at the Gandhi Memorial Mandapam, built at the point where a portion of Gandhi’s ashes were kept before immersion in the sea, its architecture designed so that sunlight falls on the memorial stone on Gandhi’s birthday each year. End the day at the Kanyakumari shoreline for the sunset over the Arabian Sea, one of the few points in India where both sunrise and sunset are visible over the sea on the same day. Overnight stay in Kanyakumari.

Day 7: Sunrise – Suchindram Temple – Departure to Trivandrum

Start before dawn at the Kanyakumari shoreline for the sunrise over the Bay of Bengal, the most celebrated and most photographed moment at the cape. Continue to Suchindram, approximately 13 km from Kanyakumari, and visit the Thanumalayan Temple, a rare shrine where Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are worshipped together in a single image and where the musical pillars of the main mandapa produce different tones when struck, a feat of Dravidian architectural acoustics that has few parallels in South Indian temple construction. After breakfast and check out, transfer to Trivandrum, approximately 90 km and 2 hours via NH66, for your departure.
