Upon arrival at Paro Airport, complete the immigration formalities and meet your Bhutanese guide. You will then be transferred to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. En route, stop at Chuzom, the confluence of the Thimphu (Wang Chhu) and Paro (Pa Chhu) rivers, where you will see three stupas built in Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepalese styles. Upon arrival in Thimphu, check in at your hotel. The evening is free for leisure. Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu.
After breakfast, embark on a sightseeing tour of Thimphu City. Visit Kuensel Phodrang, home to the gigantic Buddha Dordenma Statue, which offers a magnificent view of Thimphu town. Then, visit the National Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in 1974 to honor the third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, where locals gather to pray. Next, head to the Folk Heritage Museum, a traditional house providing insights into Bhutanese lifestyle and rural household artifacts. Visit Changangkha Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Thimphu, and the Motithang Takin Reserve, a wildlife reserve for Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin. In the evening, visit Tashichho Dzong, also known as the Fortress of the Glorious Religion, which houses some ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body. Return to your hotel for an overnight stay in Thimphu.
After breakfast, drive to Punakha. On the way, stop at Dochula Pass, situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters, known for its 108 Druk Wangyal Stupas and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Upon arrival in Punakha/Wangdue, visit Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, which requires a short hike of around 30-45 minutes. Afterward, visit Punakha Dzong, an impressive fortress located at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Po Chhu rivers. Check into your hotel in the evening. The rest of the evening is free for leisure. After breakfast, you have the option to take an excursion to Gangtey, a beautiful glacial valley that is home to the Black Necked Crane, which arrives in winter. Visit Gangtey Goemba, a monastery of the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism, and the Black Necked Crane Information Centre, which offers crane-watching equipment and reference books. Later, return to your hotel in Punakha/Wangdue for an overnight stay. Alternatively, you can hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a 45-minute hike that offers breathtaking views of the Punakha Valley. Also visit the Punakha Suspension Bridge and Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery. The rest of the day is free for leisure. Overnight stay at the hotel in Punakha/Wangdue.
After breakfast, drive to Paro. En route, stop at the Royal Botanical Garden in Lamperi, Bhutan’s first botanical park. Continue your journey to Paro, stopping at the Immigration Check Point in Hongtsho Village to return the permit that was stamped earlier. Also, visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a temple built in the 13th century by Thangthong Gyalpo, also known as the Iron Bridge Builder. Upon arrival in Paro, visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower overlooking Paro Valley, now converted into a national museum. Next, visit Paro Rimpung Dzong, known as the Fortress of the Heap of Jewels, built in 1646. Walk down to Nemi Zam Bridge, a traditional covered cantilever bridge connecting Paro town to the Dzong. After breakfast, visit Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched on a cliff at an altitude of 3,100 meters in the Upper Paro Valley. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery. The hike to the monastery takes about 5-6 hours to complete and involves steep stairs. It is not recommended for small children and elderly people. On the way back, visit Kyichu Lakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan. Return to your hotel for an overnight stay in Paro.
After breakfast, take an excursion to Chele La Pass, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, which separates Paro Valley and the Haa Valley. From here, you can see Paro Valley on one side and Haa Valley on the other. Continue your drive to Haa Valley and visit the 7th century Lhakhang Karpo, also known as the White Temple, Lhakhang Nagpo, also known as the Black Temple, and Haa Wangchuk Lo Dzong. Return to your hotel in the evening. The rest of the evening is free for leisure. Overnight stay at the hotel in Paro.
