Day 01: Ushuaia Arrival & Embarkation
Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina, the world’s southernmost city, and explore its vibrant Patagonian charm or hike the surrounding forests. Consider a day trip into the raw nature of Tierra del Fuego, a hiker’s paradise with rugged snow-capped mountains, glaciers, flower-filled meadows, and rich boggy wetlands. In the afternoon, board the expedition vessel in port. After a mandatory safety drill, the expedition begins, navigating through the calm waters of the Beagle Channel, dividing southern Tierra del Fuego between Chile and Argentina. Keep watch for whales and dolphins as we sail into the tempestuous Drake Passage. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 02: Southbound Drake Passage
Sailing onward, cross the famed Drake Passage, separating Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula, known for its rollicking conditions and strong westerly winds. Rest comfortably aboard the purpose-built expedition vessel, equipped with stabilizers and a highly qualified crew. Prepare for arrival in Antarctica with briefings from the Expedition Leader on safety and minimizing your impact on the precious wilderness, including wildlife watching tips. The Expedition Team will assist you to bio secure your clothing and equipment, protecting Antarctica’s delicate ecology. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 03: Antarctic Convergence Approach
Continue crossing the Drake Passage. The Expedition Team will share lectures on Antarctic exploration history, wildlife, geology, and glaciology. Cross into the Antarctic Convergence, watch the mercury plummet as sailing southwards into Antarctic waters, an abrupt cooling that marks the intersection of Antarctic waters with the warmer waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Expect to see petrels, albatrosses, and potentially penguins, seals and whales in abundance. Weather permitting, make landfall in the South Shetland Islands on the afternoon, marking the start of exploration on the Last Continent. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 04: South Shetland Exploration
Begin exploring the South Shetland Islands, the northernmost point of Antarctica. This chain of rugged rocks exposes us to the fury of the Southern Ocean. Discover the region’s rich wildlife, with large Gentoo and Chinstrap Penguin colonies, and an abundance of large seabirds such as predatory Giant Petrels. The ice-clad mountains of Livingstone, Greenwich and King George Islands give us a glimpse of what is to come as venture further south. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 05: Volcanic Sands & Penguin Colonies
Explore the South Shetland Islands further. Potential landing sites include the black steaming sands and rusting ruins of Deception Island (an active volcanic crater), the bustling penguin colonies of Aitcho and Half Moon Islands, or the old sealers’ anchorage of Yankee Harbour. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 06: Antarctic Peninsula – Gerlache Strait
Explore further south on the Antarctic Peninsula in the Gerlache Strait region. Our exact route will be subject to careful planning by the Expedition Leader and Captain. Aim to visit a range of sites that showcase the best of this staggeringly beautiful region. Marvel at the massive icebergs and vast glaciers on a Zodiac cruise in Paradise Bay. Be moved by penguins tenderly caring for their precious eggs, and fiercely defending their nests on Cuverville Island. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 07: Glaciers, Whales and History
Experience the Antarctica of old at historic huts such as Damoy Point, lovingly restored and open to all. Feel the spray of water from the blow of a humpback whale on a Zodiac safari in Wilhelmina Bay. Wonder at awe-inspiring scenery on a ship cruise through the Lemaire Channel. Watch cataracts of ice tumble into clear blue ocean on a hike over the active glaciers of Neko Harbour. Wind, ice, and sea conditions will dictate precise destinations and timings, explained in evening briefings by your Expedition Leader. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 08: Northbound Drake Passage
Depart Antarctica and spend two days at sea on the way northwards back across the infamous Drake Passage towards the shores of the Beagle Channel. A variety of activities will be arranged on board to provide our guests with the chance to reflect on their voyage. Relax with an expertly crafted cocktail in the Nordic Bar in the company of new friends, soak up the knowledge and passion of our Expedition Team during lectures in the Shackleton Lounge, or simply enjoy the flight of the albatross which accompany us northwards. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 09: Farewell Cocktail Aboard
Continue the voyage across the Drake Passage. Join the Captain and Officers for the Farewell Cocktail Party during your last evening onboard, followed by a presentation of photos and video by our onboard photographer. Relive your Antarctic adventure. Overnight on board the vessel.
Day 10: Ushuaia Disembarkation
Arrive back at the pier of Ushuaia, Argentina. After a hearty breakfast, bid farewell to the Crew and Albatros Expedition Team and descend the gangway back to dry land.
